“She is so beautiful, so slim in precisely the right places, dressed in such daring colours and with yet with enough meaningful presence to leave one in awe!” Young Randy was beholding a sparkling new sport show. You see, he just received a new pair of sneakers for Christmas and just could not stop admiring these wonders of design and latest technology. These were some of the most beautiful and intricate creations he had ever seen, and he was not even sure whether to put them back in the box lest they get scuffed, smudged and generally worn-off by life. No, as painful their short life might be Randy was determined to wear them; he earned them by being a good son and a hard-working student. Besides, who could really withstand a temptation of new bragging rights?
Randy has always to found beauty and creativity where most found mundane and outright depressing. He has thrived in sparks of enthusiasm even in face of almost insurmountable odds. Being a perennial Canuck fan, he never stopped cheering and hoping, when many simply put a different jersey – “Oilers” or “Rangers” will do. No Randy would not quit, he could not. Scintillating strands of proverbial silver-lining were always there to spur him on.
Having grown up in Burnaby and later in Prince George with parents in full-time ministry, a maturing teenager was in the crossroads. There was so much to do in Prince George but Lower Mainland offered so many more exciting paths that Randy simply could not resist. Prince George was a large spot on the BC map; Vancouver was an outlet to the whole world! The only person who could stop Randy was Randy himself and this was not about to happen. Randy had just turned eighteen, finished high school and was free to make his own decisions. He did not know exactly what lay ahead, except that the Lord was with him.
The independent youth landed firmly on his feet, as Randy loved his new career in athletic shoes. Red, black and spacey – it was all exciting, he thrived beyond measure in pouring his inordinate creative juices into all his tasks, simple and complex. Not surprisingly, his career was quickly progressing. His quiet and determinate service just could go unnoticed. But “Is this my calling?” his puzzled with the Lord. It was not certain despite many professional accolades, maybe there was more? One day it became brilliantly clear. Randy, a young store manager, had just met a new employee. Afterwards, sitting alone, a little dazed, he marvelled what had just hit him. He knew the answer. The Lord meant to cross their paths to make one. She, dynamic and outgoing, burst into his private world to open a great new chapter.
Inseparable ever since, first as friends and later as soul-mates, Randy and Kim have carried their dreams as one. United in aspirations and surrounded by growing family, they have encouraged one another in the service of the Lord. They have nurtured their mutual passion for music. He has excelled in drums, she in singing. He has learned every particular of selections and sounds, she has mastered her style. His work ethic and artistic gifts have engendered a new dream – to meld youth, affected by popular culture, and Christianity of Old Rugged Cross in one perfect harmony. One that is clear, to initiated and strangers alike. One that is obvious, shining on the top of the hill!
Together, Kim and Randy cannot help but inspire. Always in pursuit of their selfless dreams of service and joy, their contributions are not loud but dispensable. Her tireless efforts just have recently transformed the sanctuary into a winter wonderland, and his unstinting commitment to the worship team and Route 67 ministry leave imprints of thankfulness and God’s touch in many a hearts. Kim and Randy, together with you we are looking forward to new chapters of dreams coming alive.
